The most important schools of thought in engaging students

Research has demonstrated that engaging students in the learning process increases their attention and focus, motivates them to practice higher-level critical thinking skills, and promotes meaningful learning experiences. Instructors who adopt a student-centered approach to instruction increase opportunities for student engagement, which then helps everyone more successfully achieve the courses learning objective. However, there are different management strategies that would help in engaging students and in preventing problems. All these strategies are guided by different schools of thought and research bases. But the two best schools of thought are implication from learning theory and implication from studies of social interaction and communication.

Based on  the implication from learning theory we need to make use of the teaching cycles to get the students to choose one task and prosocial behavior. One thing the teacher can employ is ‘Inquiry Instructional Strategies’ in which the teacher can get the students to interact with the information, make observation, and formulate and articulate ideas that lead them towards discover, concept, construction or invention. Not to mention, the use of ‘Direct Instructional Strategies’ especially in the teaching of issues related to management and classroom rules and expectations of prosocial behavior like teaching them directly certain social skills like greetings, saying please and thank you, listening to others, etc.

This theory helps in classroom practice to organize the process of teaching and learning, so as to make sure that process of information goes smoothly. Also it shows that curriculum should be organized in such a way that the sequence of materials reflects the notion of repetition so that the content at one level is built on the basis of the previous one. Implication from learning theory helps the teacher stipulate the kind of knowledge and the way learners can inculcate them.

Social interaction plays an important role in learning. Interacting with other people has proven to be quite effective in assisting the learner to organize their thoughts, reflect on their understanding, and find gaps in their reasoning. The second important theory is implication from studies of social interaction and communication in which the success of the teacher depends on how the teacher tries to engage the students in the learning activities. How much we engage the students depends on two interrelated variables:

1-the types of communication styles teachers model as they interact with students.

1-a-true dialogue vs IRE which means Initiation, Response, Evaluation. And IRF which means Initiation, Response, Feedback.

2-b-types of classroom climates that the teachers establish.

As a teacher I plan to use these theories in my class by asking meaningful questions that focus on the deeper meaning of the minor details and give them opportunities to collaborate and learn from each other. Also to create a meaningful activity that gives students the opportunity to apply new knowledge.

what can you do now that we were not able to do a year ago

ðŸ’ªIn my teaching diploma year I learn how to be more profession in engaging student and make them on task and |I learn the students learning styles and their multiple intelligences and how to integrate technology into teaching and learning which make my teaching journey much easier and it helps me in dealing with students in the suitable way.

This year I had gained experience in giving private classes for students at home but its a big challenge for me since this is my first year teaching experience especially with students that have been learning for two years at home through online learning.

I hope this year will be better than the past years and gain the necessary experience through my new courses, and that the next year will be in health and safety for all, and that the covid-19 epidemic will end especially after taking the necessary vaccination doses to combat this epidemic and the life has become more comfortable and safe.

challenges you faces when learning/teaching online

💭Online learning offers several benefits for students who seek flexibility while attending college. Also, the COVID-19 has changed the education discourse drastically because now the students can find their courses and books online where they can study as per their own schedule. However, there are multiple problems faced by students in online classes.

Internet accessibility has resulted in an increment in the demand for online learning across the world. We know very well that online learning has managed to attract lots of attention. But many of them face some challenges of online learning such as hindrances in their comprehensive learning experience and real-time doubt solution. The advantages are getting suppressed by the challenge during the process of learning.

👉online learning challenges faced by students:

1.adaptability issue in online learning:

The students find it difficult to adapt to the online learning environment immediately after the traditional classroom learning environment. The students who have always been studying in the traditional classroom mindset are not able to focus on the online platform at once. It is important for the students to accept the new learning environment with an open mind.

2.technical issue in online learning:

Many students are not well equipped with a high internet connection that is required for online learning. Due to this, they face problems in going live for virtual learning and other platforms that require an internet connection. They face technical issues in online classes as they are not much aware of technology and computer applications. A slow and high internet connection can play an important role in how quickly you can attend the class and do not miss any live sessions.

3. Computer Knowledge challenge in online learning:

Lack of computer education is a major concern in today’s world. There are many students who still cannot operate basic computers with MS word and PowerPoint. And whenever some technical issues emerge, they find it difficult to solve the problem in such a scenario. They face difficulties with live classes, usage of appropriate icons, MS office, communication-related apps and websites, browsing study materials, etc. Sometimes they do not know technology proficiency like login, live classes, creating and submitting work, communicating with teachers and friends.

4. Time management problem in online learning:

In many cases, students find difficulty in managing their time with online learning. Online learning is completely new for them and requires intensive work. They need a scheduled planner to manage their time in an effective manner. Online learning provides flexible time, unlike traditional classrooms. But some face difficulties in adjusting to the time required for online learning.

5. online learning challenge:

Students have previously learned in the physical classroom. Online learning can make you adapt to different styles of learning. There are some students who can adapt to these styles quickly but what about the students who need time? In such cases, they lack concentration, inability to understand the live classes, difficulty in creating projects and assignments using technology.

💭As education is going on online, many educators are being asked to teach their students from home. We know that all the teachers are not aware of online learning and their process as most of them are into traditional classroom teaching. It sometimes makes it difficult for them to change their way of teaching. Proper online training should be given to teachers before teaching students. With all the benefits of online learning still, there are few challenges faced by teachers.

👉Online learning challenges faced by teachers:

1.engaging student during online classes:

As students are moving towards online learning from traditional classrooms, it becomes difficult for teachers to adjust to a new learning platform. Teaching online may not influence and engage students for longer periods of time. They can easily get distracted and lose concentration during live sessions.

2.time commitment issue in online learning:

If the course content is thought in person then you might not really understand the time commitment. It is still difficult to convert those learning into an effective online format. Teachers should be given some time for proper planning of the content and methods to deliver to the students. Teachers are not able to deliver effective content in time. It is said that teachers take more time in teaching online than face to face. If students exceed their deadline in submitting assignments or projects can lead to more work for you.

3.lack of proper teaching methods in online learning:

We know that most of the teachers follow typical classroom-style teaching methods, as they use to teach with only a blackboard and books. It becomes difficult for them to adopt new teaching methods that are completely virtual and technology-driven.

Tools that can be used in online assessment

Best Online Assessment Tools for Teachers:

Paper tests, quizzes, and spot questions are just a few of the tools used in assessment we take for granted. The best online assessment tools for teachers give the same level of feedback for targeted virtual learning. Our top picks are Google Forms, Mentimeter, Poll Everywhere, and Kahoot for their accessibility and features.
Teachers need to know how well students are assimilating lessons so as not to leave anyone behind. You also have to assess each student at the end of the quarter, term, and semester and bestow a final grade that reflects both their understanding and their level of effort.
Online assessment tools for teachers are a necessary part of the remote learning picture. From one day to the next you need to know what your students understand. If you have a handle on their learning gaps then you can adjust your lessons to target them.
Grades matter, but so does understanding and being able to build on lessons to-date.

Integrating technology into teaching

Integrating technology with teaching means the use of learning technologies to introduce, reinforce, supplement and extend skills. The difference between the classroom of exemplary users of technology and technology users is in the way their classes are conducted.

Students and teachers can access information at any time! This is possibly the most obvious benefit of technology. When old-school teachers were students, they had to spend hours in the library looking for the information they needed. Today, technology integration makes everything different and simpler.

The future of the educational system is practically determined by the development of technology. Some educators and experts are against the trends of implementing EdTech tools and apps in every single aspect of the schooling system, mainly because technology is a source of distraction for students. However, proper technology integration guides students towards greater understanding of all concepts covered in class.

7 benefits Οf Technology Integration Ιn Education:

  1.  Technology makes teaching easy!
  2.  Technology helps you track students’ progress!
  3.  Educational technology is good to the environment!
  4.  Thanks to technology, students enjoy learning!
  5. Technology makes distance learning more accessible than ever!
  6. Students and teachers can access information at any time!
  7.  Technology makes collaboration more effective!

You stand no chance of being called “the cool teacher” if you keep neglecting the use of educational technology in the classroom. The benefits of technology integration described above should convince you of the fact that this form education is great for both students and teachers.

EDUC 561 Class

In my opinion Educational media and technology prepares students to use technology in educational settings and to develop skills for a variety of technology.
Media and Technology in education could be easily deduced that teachers use computer for teaching and learning. They use the computer to impart knowledge in the classroom, create creativity, conduct activities, easily deliver their wordy explanations and instill interest in the lesson they are teaching. So this course is very interesting course that has its own features in interacting and encouraging students in a fun and creative way.
